As a dysfunctional middle class couple settle down for dinner with a bottle of wine their evening of tired bickering is shattered by a gang of youths. They burst into the house and tie up their unfortunate hosts and it soon transpires that they've come for the couple's wayward teenage son. This is tense stuff, the dialogue is strong and the director has gone for gritty realism. In the end he's successful enough in his aims to make this a harrowing and thoroughly unpleasant film to sit through. Every character is unremittingly unlikeable and the overall mood is sombre, depressing and bleak. The various elements here come together well but you're not really supposed to have fun watching this and, believe me, you won't.
