This is yet another Hollywood remake of a successful Japanese tale of ghostly revenge. This time the ghosts covet life and they find a way to get at us through modern technology (this theme of technology providing our downfall can be seen over and over in Japanese horror). Central character Mattie sees her boyfriend commit suicide and gets sucked into trying to save the world from this rapidly spreading threat as the nasty ghosts claim the people around her one by one, literally sucking out their will to live. There are some spooky moments here with creepy ghosts and quality effects and the set designers have gone to town making an incredibly drab and depressing backdrop. However the characters are two-dimensional and the plot is messy despite Wes Craven's involvement in the re-write. Like the original this film is unremittingly bleak but it is also far less subtle.
