The film opens with George Grieves celebrating his fortieth birthday with family and friends, the following day he is admitted to hospital for a routine endoscopy but something goes wrong and he gets trapped in the increasingly nightmarish world of the hospital. This is thoughtful stuff and packed with symbolism, it builds a chilling atmosphere slowly but as George is tormented with growing ferocity the film begins to drag and it loses momentum by the time it reaches the predictable conclusion. There are sub-plots which are disappointingly never explored and the film becomes quite a frustrating viewing experience at times, while the mood is certainly chilling and some of the visuals are nicely done this just isn't as clever as it thinks it is.
