The Crazies

The government have been dabbling in germ warfare and their latest virus has leaked and infected the population of Evan's City causing people to die or go completely crazy. As a riot kicks off the military turn up and impose martial law immediately making things a lot worse and engaging in the wide scale slaughter of infected people. In this clever low budget flick we cut between a group of survivors as they fight to stay alive and the political and military leaders as they completely fail to deal with the threat. The plot and dialogue are extremely good and there's a palpable sense of chaos but Romero clearly lacked the budget necessary to make this a great film.
